COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE

Illustrated Family
GROUP PROJECT

Online Community Service Project with an NGO

In this assignment, we are collaborating with OrphanCare, a not-for-profit foundation that endeavours to give institutionalised children and unplanned, at-risk, newborn babies the joy of growing up in a family. No child should be denied family life because of circumstances. They work closely with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and the Department of Social Welfare and are partners with Lumos, an international non-profit organisation that advises nations about deinstitutionalisation (DI), to implement the transition from institutional care to family based care.

In this project, we are helping OrphanCare to raise awareness on certain issues : Baby Dumping, Sexual Harassment and Unwanted Pregnancy through posters and social media.

**Below is the work we have done in this project , I will include my personal thoughts and reflection at the side as well!

Group Members and Roles

I initiated to edit video in this project. I chose this task because I have some experience before and it will make our progress more efficient. It is indeed time consuming, but I like it because everytime I do it, I gained new skills or knowledge, and I felt achieved. I did not know there are so many non profit organisations in Malaysia and did not get to know what they are doing until i started to research on NGO in Malaysia. To my surprise, a lot of them are well established and many people are involved in them.

Due to the pandemic, we could not lend any help physically, but we are  comfortable with the mode, as we are used to online group projects. Therefore, discussion through online platform is not a problem, finding a time to meet up is easy as well. I initiated to email and contact a few NGOs, it was quite scary and I had no clue how to get in touch with them at first, however, it was easier than I thought, and once I have done it, I found it easier to contact other organisations. I emailed 3 NGOs, at last, we chose OrphanCare. I think this assignment really helps me to expose to the non profit organisation in Malaysia and know they are actually so many children or women going through tough situations.

In the interview, I was one of the hosts. I was quite nervous as I have not done any interview through zoom with any organisation before. Ms. Riza and my groupmates made it easier and less tense, we had a great interview and I am glad that I have done it.

After the interview, we gather and discuss what we are going to do for OrphanCare. Throughout the process, a lot of ideas and suggestions were going around. Sometimes, it was quite tense because everyone has different opinion, so when we need to make a decision out of many, we do it through voting. I think this is the best way to be fair and respect everyone. Besides that, I think art of speech is a very important thing to learn when it comes to communicating with people. A lot of times, misunderstanding and dreadlock is avoided through kind and gentle words. I have learnt to appreciate other's work even if it is just a small matter. I think appreciation is the one of the key elements for a harmonious group.

Posters

These posters are designed by three of my groupmates, and I think they did a really great job. The posters are impactful and speak the story itself. To be frank, I just realised how these issues are often being ignored through this project. I felt I finally did something to raise awareness, especially as woman to urge public on these issues.
