FINAL PROJECT

iNDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT

We are to design a Mangrove Wildlife Observation Unit at Kuala Selangor Nature Park. This Observation Unit should also provide space for observing (expanded from Individual Project 2), resting, discussing and such within the built-up space of maximum 200sqm (including 30sqm of look Out space taken from Project 2). There shall be maximum of 3 numbers of people that can inhabit the structure at a time. The Mangrove Wildlife Observation Unit must correspond to the immediate site context. The relationship between our design and the context is important in making our Observation Unit unique to its landscape and activity. The design of the Observation Unit must demonstrate our design intentions. with the application of architectural principles, materiality and constructability within the site context thus creating memorable spatial experiences for the user.
Space requirements are as follows:
Activity area - Observation / look out space (expanded from individual Project 2)- 50sqm
Working area (discussion area)- 50sqm
Resting area (pantry, informal gatherings)- 50sqm
Sleep area- 30sqm
Shared bath and toilet with changing area-20sqm

design concept

My intention is to let the users experience nature. I intent to create a structure that looks light and airy. This is inspired by the site context of my project site. In order to let the users experience as much nature as they can in this mangrove forest, I have chosen a site that has river and mangrove forest. Mangrove trees are the first defense of coastal winds and erosive waves, they have prop roots and buttress  trunk to help them to stand strong in mud and water. Look up, foliage are hanging so lightly above these strong bodies. Whereas, river contains the nature element that has a soft texture, not solid and easygoing, the water. These are the things that trigger the idea of 'hardness within softness', vice versa. Therefore, I design a structure that is able to hold your feet firmly, at the same time, not restricting you to get close to the mangrove forest. This structure will blend into the nature, as well as the users.

reflection

First of all, I love this design. This is one of the wildest and boldest I have ever gone in my studio projects. I have explored the materials, design concepts in this assignment. I have realised that the site context is really important in designing a structure, and how the design is able to respect the site. Lastly, I am very thankful for my tutor, Mr. Chern Li. He has inspired and guided me well throughout this project.
